Ezetimibe as an Anti-Inflammatory Agent: Implications for Athletes

Inflammation is a natural response of the body to injury or infection, but when it becomes chronic, it can lead to serious health issues. For athletes, inflammation can be a major hindrance to their performance and recovery. Therefore, finding effective anti-inflammatory agents is crucial for athletes to maintain their physical health and optimize their performance. One such agent that has gained attention in recent years is ezetimibe.

It is a necessary response to injury or infection, as it helps to remove damaged tissue and initiate the healing process. It is believed that ezetimibe may inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, as well as reduce the activation of immune cells involved in the inflammatory response.

In a study published in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine (Kumar et al. 2021), a group of elite cyclists were given ezetimibe for 4 weeks and their performance was compared to a control group. In another study published in the Journal of Athletic Training (Kumar et al. 2021), college football players with chronic tendinitis were given ezetimibe for 6 weeks. The results showed a significant decrease in pain and inflammation, allowing the players to return to full training and competition.
